A new way to look at the definition of functional movement ~ from within the class design.
Functional movement is what you do to restore the body to normal movement after isolation work.
In classes like yoga, balance and strength, barre, anything that might utilize isometrics or isolated training, it’s really helpful and important to follow those tight, strength-based movements with more “global” movements.
Examples:
- After an exercise that really works the right and left medial glutes (unilateral exercises), throw in a set of squats.
- After isolating the biceps, follow with a set of large range full arm movements.
Use language such as, “Now let’s get back to center” or “Let’s work on some symmetry,” or “Now let’s really open it up” (in reference to the large range global movement).
At the end of class, when using this concept, students walk out feeling open and long in their skeleton rather than compressed and stiff from isometrics.
